From
the first time I talked to Rick on the phone, arrived in camp and
then spent 12 days with Pete (our guide), I felt as if I was
spending time with my closest friends. This was the third time I
have been to Canada and it was, hands down, the most awesome hunt I
have ever been on in my life. We tent camped but lacked nothing. We
ate well and had a warm fire to sit next to in the evening and share
stories. Pete was an extremely capable and obliging guide. His sole
purpose was to make the hunt a lasting memory and bagging a trophy
just topped it off. Having been a guide all his life, Rick covered
every detail to ensure everything went as smooth as possible.
Together they make a dream a reality.
I not only left with a moose I am proud of, but also left proudly
knowing a group of people that became lifetime friends. I would
honestly say that, even if I had not taken an animal, it was that
great an experience! On the way home my buddy and I were already
planning our next Claw Mountain hunt of a lifetime! Would it be a
mountain caribou, goat or perhaps a bigger moose……..Ah, another
dream!

Having just returned
from Claw Mountain Outfitters, I can only begin to relate the
awesome time that I had hunting there. I’ve been fortunate enough to
have shared many other hunting camps throughout my life, and Claw
Mountain has been the best I’ve experienced. Rick Solmonson’s outfit
was truly great; from the wonderful friendships they offer, to their
hard working guides, it was all top notch. I guess what struck me
most was the magnificent beauty of the mountains and lakes with
their awe inspiring grasp, I’ve never been so humbled.
This was my fourth moose hunt, (third in BC) and I wouldn’t trade
this one for the other three put together. I wasn’t fortunate enough
to take a bull this time, but there is no one to blame except
myself. There were plenty of moose, I was just a little bit too
picky, but on the last day my close friend and guide Pete McKeen
called a very nice bull in to within 25yards. The bull turned and
offered me a broadside shot, but just as I was at full draw and
released my arrow the awesome bull lurched forward which ended with
a arrow through his flank. The arrow went completely through him and
was covered with fat and very little blood. We tracked a slight
blood trail for awhile until we lost all sign, and it was obvious my
bull was gone to be hunted another day. Still with not filling my
tag, I have no complaints; this was by far my greatest hunt.
Rick and his family and friends has spent his entire life guiding hunters, and working for
other outfitters and has earned the reputation as being one of the
best there is. His knowledge and hard work is respected throughout
North America by hunters and outfitters alike.
Now Rick has his own area, Claw Mountain Outfitters. It is rich with
game and in my eyes the most beautiful place in British Columbia.
Although many of the camps were run down because the area has set
idle for many years, Rick and his family and friends, have worked
very hard and have gotten everything back in top shape to be a very
impressive and comfortable setup.
One other thing that Claw Mountain has done that sets them apart
from other outfitters in BC, is that they have set up a large part
of its outfitting area to be kept very primitive and will be hunted
with bow and arrow only. With this area not being hunted for so many
years, many of the animals have never seen or had any contact with a
human before in their lifetime. This is a bowhunters dream!
If Rick will have me, I hope to hunt with Claw Mountain Outfitters
for many years to come.

About
nine years ago, I read an interesting article in a magazine about
bow hunting moose in British Columbia. I am strictly an archery
hunter, so I did my homework on possible outfitters, and met up with
Rick Solmonson. Over the years I have had some fantastic hunting
experiences with Rick and am currently setting up another hunt with
him.
I have hunted with many guides, but none have worked harder, were
more personable, or knew the land and game as well as Rick. He has
become a good friend and someone I highly respect. If you want
a great hunting experience in the most beautiful country in the
North, you need not look any further than Rick Solmonson's Claw
Mountain Outfitters.

 This
was my first hunting experience with Claw Mountain Outfitters. They
provided a challenging, fair chase hunt in the stunning wilderness
of British Columbia. The cabins, although rustic, were comfortable
and right on the lake with beautiful mountain scenery. I was able to
harvest a bull moose on the first day and a caribou later in the
week. Our guides, Steve and Lyle, were very knowledgeable of the
hunting area and made every effort to satisfy the hunters. They
provided us with sure footed, well-mannered horses and consistently
worked toward maintaining quality service. I have previously hunted
in Ontario and eastern Canada for many years without success and
Claw Mountain Outfitters provided a successful harvest
and a great experience. They provided us with the finest hot meals
including fried chicken, steak, pork and first class breakfasts.
Overall, this was an absolutely wonderful experience and we hope to
go back very soon. I highly recommend this outfitter.

After a beautiful drive to Prince George, we
boarded a small airplane for our two hour ride to Black Lake. After
arriving at Black Lake to the greatest accommodations I have ever
seen in all my hunting in B.C.and after getting to know Rick and
Kelly I knew this was going to be a great hunt. The next day we were
off to our different lakes to start our 14 day hunt. The lake I flew
into was so pretty and
quiet
it really made you feel like it was just you and nature.Upon landing
we spotted two great moose within very close proximity to our camp.
Here I met my guide. (Bruce Chandler) Bruce being form Australia
made for a real fun and exciting guide. This camp was more than I
expected--Dry cabins, permeate beds to place our bags on, and a
great wood stove--I've been in worse motel rooms! Bruce and I spent
many hours on the horses checking out where we might find the big
boy. We saw moose almost every day but not the one we wanted. On day
five my partner and his guide (Rick) banged a 55 inch bull just
across the lake from camp. That made for an exciting time as we
spent that day getting the bull to camp. The next day Bruce and I
continued our quest for another big bull and on day nine we found
our trophy. My shot was quite long (375 yards) I think more luck
than skill. My moose was 48" wide and 40" high and after a whole day
of work to get him back to camp I was ready to rest and brag. With
the pressure being off, Bruce and I then had time to really get to
know one another and share our family pictures and such. Claw
Mountain Outfitters is one great crew to hunt with and I would
recommend the entire team to anyone.
